John Charles Haynes was born in 1896 at Bleak Hall, Nottinghamshire, he was the son of Joseph a coal miner hewer and Eliza Haynes née Maskrey of 27 Unity Street East Kirkby Nottinghamshire.
His father Joseph was born in 1859 at Wirksworth, his mother Eliza Maskery was born in 1860 also at Wirksworth, they were married on 26th September 1880 at Wirksworth, Derbyshire, they went on to have 12 children, sadly 4 were to die in infancy or early childhood.
In the 1911 census the family are living at 42 Sherwood Street, East Kirkby, Joseph Haynes52 yrs is a coal miner hewer he is living with his wife Eliza 51 yrs and their children, Willim 28 yrs a coal miner hewer, Arthur 22 yrs acoal miner hewr, Walter 21 yrs a coal miner hewer Charles 15 yrs acoal miner pony driver, Harold 14 yrs a coal miner pony driver and Sidney 11 yrs a scholar.
Private John Charles Haynes enlisted at Newark, he served with the 1/6th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he went to France 1st September 1915 and was killed in action, 16th March 1917, age 23, whilst serving in the trenches near Gommecourt, France.
