George William Hayes was born in 1899 at Huthwaite, He was the son of Joseph a colliery labourer and Jane Hayes nee Binsley and the brother of Mary Jane, Frederick, Sarah Elizabeth, Ethel, Clara, Harold and John Joseph Hayes of 46 Frederick Street, Sutton in Ashfield,

His father Joseph was born in 1864 at Steeple Bumpstead, Essex, his mother Jane Binsley was born in 1875 at Tibshelf, Derbyshire, they were married on 18th April 1893 at Tibshelf they went on to have 9 children, sadly 1 was to die in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census they lived on Columbia Street Huthwaite, Nottinghamshire Joseph 47 yrs is a colliery labourer, he is living with his wife Jane 36 yrs and their 10 children, including George William 12 yrs a scholar.

Military history

Driver George William Hayes enlisted and served with the 120th Bty 21st Bde, Royal Field Artillery, he died at Nowshera, India of the effects of heat, he is buried at Nowshera Military Cemetery and is commemorated on the Delhi Memorial India Gate.
