Moses Hartwell was born in 1890 at Walsall Wood, Staffordshire, he was the son the late Joseph Hartwell a coal miner and Sarah Ann Hartwell née Musgrove
His father Joseph was born in 1858 at Byfield, Northamptonshire, he died in 1900 at Mansfield he was 40 yrs of age, his mother Sarah Ann Musgrove was born in 1862 at Mansfield, they were married in 1881 at Mansfield they went on to have 9 children.
In the 1911 census his family are living at 7 Chapel Yard at Alfreton , James Gibson is head of the household he is 42 yrs he is a coal miner hewer, he is living with George Gibson Hartwell 7 yrs an illegitimate son and Anthony Gibson Hartwell 6 yrs an illegitimate son, also living at the address is Mrs Sarah Hartwell a widow 47 yrs a house keeper she is living with Albert Hartwell son 23 yrs single a colliery banksman Moses Hartwell 21 yrs single a coal miner loader, Susan Hartwell 14yrs a daughter single and David Hartwell son 12 yrs of age
Moses married Ada Ellen Smith (born 26th October 1893) on 23rd December 1911 at Alfreton Parish Church he is 21 yrs of age and is a collier living at 14 Chapel Yard, Alfreton and a bachelor, Ada Ellen Smith 18 yrs is a spinster living at the same address.
They had a son Joseph Hartwell born 24th February 1915, and lived at 24 New Street, South Normaton, Alfreton.
Commencing 10th December 1917 his widow was awarded a pension of 18 shillings and 9 pence a week.
Private Moses Hartwell/ Hastwell enlisted at Mansfield whilst residing at Stanton Hill, he served with the 1st battalion Lincolnshire Regiment, he was killed in action on 30th April 1917, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial
