Claude Henry Hallam was born in 1881 at Nottingham, he was the son of Joseph Henry a clerk and miliner and Elizabeth (née Simpson) Hallam of 16 Greenhill Road Eastwood Nottinghamshire.
His father Joseph Henry was born in 1854 at Nottingham, his mother Elizabeth Simpson was born in 1855 also at Nottingham, they were married on 5th July 1877 at Holy Trinity Church, Nottingham, they went on to have 3 children, Florence Elizabeth born 1879, Claude Henry born 1881 and Maude H born 1885.
In the 1891 census the family are living at 124 Alfreton Road, Nottingham, Joseph Henry 36 yrs is a miliner he is living withhis wife Elizabeth 36 yrs and their children, Florence 12 yrs, Claude H 10 yrs and Maud H 6 yrs of age.
Able Seaman Claude Henry Hallam served with the Mercantile Marine, he was serving on board the SS Queen (London) when it was sunk on 28th June 1918 whilst en route from Cardiff to Italy, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Tower Hill Memorial.
On 28 June 1918, the ship SS Queen was on a voyage from Cardiff, Wales, to La Spezia, Italy, carrying a cargo of coal and general goods. While sailing off the northwest coast of Spain (roughly 130 miles north-west of Cape Villano), she was torpedoed without warning and sunk by the German submarine U-53, commanded by the infamous Hans Rose.
Claude Henry Hallam drowned along with 21 other crew members during the attack, including the ship's 33-year-old Master, R. Putt, and the Boatswain, Nicholas Hartley
