Fred Freeman was born in 1894 at Burton upon Trent, he was the son of William Freeman a cooper and Elizabeth Freeman née Lambert.
His father William was born in 1862 at Rainworth, Mansfield, his mother Elizabeth Lambert was born in 1863 also at Mansfield, they were married on 2nd October 1877 at St Peters Church, Nottingham, they went on to have 10 children.
In the 1911 census the family are living at 223 Goodman Street, Burton upon Trent, William Freeman 49 yrs is a cooper, he is living with his wife Elizabeth 48 yrs and their children, Frank 24 yrs a general labourer, Fred 17 yrs a coopers apprentice, Harold 15 yrs a dray lad, Elizabeth 18 yrs a domestic servant, Elsie 10 yrs a scholar and Millicent 6 yrs a scholar.
Private Fred Freeman enlisted at Burton on Trent whilst residing at Stanton Hill, he served with the 2nd battalion Lincolnshire Regiment, he was killed in action on 1st July 1916 the first day of the Battle of the Somme having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
