George Clarke was born in 1895 at Sutton in Ashfield he was the son James Henry Clarke a collier l;abourer and the late Fanny Clarke née Mellors, and the brother of John Ernest, Florrie, James Oliver and Henry Thornton Clarke.
His father James Henry was born in 1864 at Edwinstow, his mother Fanny Mellors was born in 1867 at Warsop, she died prior to 1911 they were married on 25th December 1886 at St Peters Church, Warson they had 5 children.
In 1911 they lived at New Cross Street, Sutton in Ashfield. James Henry (Henry) 46 yrs is a colliery labourer, he is a widow, he is living withhis children, John Ernest 20 yrs a railway engine cleanr, Florrie 22 yrs house keeper, James Olive 18 yrs a colliery labourer, George 16 yrs a coal miner hewer and Henry Thornton 14 yrs a colliery banksman
Private George Clarke enlisted at Hucknall he served with the 2/5th battalion South Staffordshire Regiment, he was killed in action on 24th April 1917, he is buried at Canadian Cemetery No.2, Neuville-St. Vaast
