Harry Wightman Carter was born in 1886 at Annesley, he was the son of Daniel a colliery weigh clerk and Catherine Carter née Wightman and the brother of Willie, Emma Wightman and Florence May Carter.
Daniel Carter was born in 1859 at Somercotes, Derbyshire, Catherine Weightman was born in 1861 at Kirkby in Ashfield, they were married in 1880 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they had 7 children, sadly 1 died in inancy or early childhood.
In the 1911 census his family lived at 9 The Grove Annesley and later at 8 Victoria Road Kirkby in Ashfield (both Nottinghamshire) Daniel 52 yrs is a colliery weigh clerk,he is living with his wife Catherine 50 yrs and their children, Willie 22 yrs a life assurance agent, Emma20yrs a dress maker and Florence May 14 yrs a scholar.
Harry married Ada Collins in 1906 their marriage was recorded at the Basford registration district.
In the 1911 census they were living at 6 Mill Street, Mansfield, Harry 25 yrs is a coal miner loader he is living with his wife Ada 27 yrs.
Lance Corporal Harry Wightman Carter enlisted at Sheffield, he served with the 3/4th battalion Seaforth Highlanders, he was killed in action between 24th and 26th July 1916, Caterpillar Valley Cemetery, Longueval
