John Burns was born in 1889 at South Kensington he was the son of Martha Marshall (formerly Burns) and Horatio Marshall (Stepfather) of 146 Main Street Huthwaite Nottinghamshire.
His medal index card shows his next of kin as his mother Mrs M Marshall of White Lion Cottages, 146 Main Street, Huthwaite, Nottinghamshire.
Military history
Private John Burns enlisted on 16th June 1915 at Mansfield, he served with the 2nd battalion Seaforth Highlanders, he was killed in action on 17th October 1916 aged 27 yrs, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
