John Atkins was born in Daw End, Staffordshire

He was the husband of Maria Cresswell (born 26th October 1895) they were married in 1913 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they lived at 7 New Street, East Kirkby, they had 2 children, Clara Alice born 23rd April 1914 and Maud born 18th October 1915.

Commencing 7th May 1917 his widow was awarded a pension of 22 shillings and 11 pence a week.

Military history

Private John Atkin enlisted at Mansfield whilst residing at East Kirkby, he served with the 15th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he was killed in action, 20th July 1916, during the attack on Trones Wood France, during the Battle of the Somme.
