Family history

William (Bill) Smith was born in 1890 at Hartshorne, Derbyshire, he was the son of William Smith a stallman in a colliery and Celia Smith née Staley of Hartshorne, Burton-on-Trent.

His father William was born in 1859 at Tickhill, Derbyshire, his mother Celia Mary Staley was born 1870 at Hartshorne, they were married in 1887 at Ashby De La Zouch, they went on to have 8 children, sadly two died in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census the family were living at 39 Newcastle Street, Mansfield Woodhouse Celia 43 yrs is living with her children, William 21 yrs a coal miner hewer, Charles 17 yrs is a coal miner horse driver, Thomas 13 yrs, John 10 yrs and Celia Mary 2 years of age.
His father is not shown as being at home on the nigt of the census.

Military history

Gunner William Smith enlisted at Derby whilst residing at Mansfied he served with 19th Heavy Bty, Royal Garrison Artillery, he landed in France on 15th July 1915 he was killed in action on 12th September 1917 and is buried at Canada Farm Cemetery, France.
