Family history

John Golland was born in 1866 at Newark upon Trent, he was the son of William a dealer in pipe clay and Eleanor Golland née Bellamy of 20 Portland Street, Newark.

His father William was born in 1835 at Newark, his mother Eleanor was born in 1841 at Newark, they were married in 1861 their marriage was recorded in the Nottingham Registration district, they went on to have 8 children, sadly two were to die in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census the family are living at 29 Portland Street, Newark, William 75 yrs is a dealer in pipe clay he is living with his wife Eleanor 70 yrs and their son Evelyn Edgar 31 yrs a music teacher.

In the same 1911 census John Golland is living at 10 Malt Mill Lane, Narrow Marsh, Nottingham John 45 yrs is a general labourer he is living with Theresa Thackery 47 yrs a lace hand.

His pension record cards shows his next of kin as his unmarried wife Teresa Thacery of 17 Foundry Yard, Leeen Side, Nottingham.

Military history

Private John Golland enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the service number 20310 in the Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he was surving wit the Royal Defence Corps whe he died on 11th June 1916 he is buried in Newark upon Trent Cemetery, Nottingham (grave ref. N.C. "C." 303).
