Family history

William Wallace was born in 1884 at Nottingham, he was the son of the late John Wallace a labourer and Emma Wallace néé Finch, of Notingham.

His father John Wallace was born in 1846 at Leicester, he died in 1906 at Nottingham he was 60 yrs of age, his mother Emma Finch was born in 1851 at Devon, they were married on 17th November 1872 at St Matthias Church, Sneinton, they went on to have 7 children.

William married Elizabeth Denny (born 21st March 1887) on 6th August 1906 at St Phillips Chruch, Nottingham, they lived at 8 Carlton Place, Walker St Nottingham, they had 2 children, Elsie born 14th November 1906 and Kate Wallace born 24th May 1910.

In 1911 they lived at 5 Villa Place Clarence Street Sneinton Nottingham William Wallace 24 yrs is a furit salesman he is living with his wife Elizabeth 24 yrs and their children, Edith 4 yrs and Kate 10 months old. thye had further children, Mabel born and died 1909 amd Maud born 1918 died in 1922.

Commencing 4th March 1918 his widow was awarded a pension of 22 shillings and 11 pence a week.

Military history

Rifleman William Wallace enlisted at Nottingham on 8th September 1914 at Nottingham, giving his age as 30 yrs and 280 days, he was a green grocer, he was posted to the Rifle Brigade and reported to their depot at Winchester on 11th September 1914. He landed in France on 11th September 1915, he was wounded in action a bomb explosion caused him to have smashed buttock and pelvis. He died of his wounds on 20th August 1917, he is buried in the Huts Cemetery (grave ref. C.14).
