Frederick Thomas Vertigan was born on 10th June 1891 at Toftree,Norfolk, baptised on 12th July 1891 at Toftree, Norwich he was the son of the late Jacob Vertigan an army pensioner and general labourer and Ellen Elizabeth Vertigan née Large of Sculthorpe, Norfolk.
His father Jacob was born in 1850 at Sculthorpe he died in 1896 aged 47 yrs, his mother Ellen Elizabeth Large was born in 1866 at North Barsham, Norfolk, they were married in 1888 in Norfolk, they went on to have 5 children.
His mother went on to remarry John Turner a wheelwright in 1902 at Walsingham Norfolk,
In the 1911 census Frederick Thomas Vertigan is living with his cousin at Pye Bridge Alfreton, Frederick is 19 yrs, single and a coal miner ganger, his couisin is Robert Edward Vertigan 24 yrs an iron worker.
He was the husband of Annie (née Smith) Vertigan (born 12th March 1895) they were married on 13th May 1917 at St Matthias Church, Sneinton, Nottingham they lived at 40 Middle Avenue Carlton Road Nottingham.
Commencing 13th January 1919 his widow was awarded a pension of 13 shillings and 9 pence a week.
Lance Corporal Frederick Vertigan enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 2nd battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he was attached to 71st Trench Mortar Battery, landing in France on 3rd May 1915 he was killed in action, 21st March 1918, aged 26, whilst holding the line near Morchies, France on the opening day of the German Spring Offensive or (Kaiserschlact) Commemorated: Arras Memorial, France. Bay 7.
