Family history

Leslie Stray was born in 1892 at Nottingham, he was the son of Horatio Nelson Stray a carter and Ada Stray néé Tomlinson, of Radford Road, Nottingham.

His father Horatio Nelson Stray was born in 1868 at Basford, his mother Ada Tomlinson was born in 1870 also at Basford, they were married in 1891 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they had a further child a daughter Ida born in 1896 (she later married 18th February 1915 to Albert Percy Clifford.)

It would appear his parents moved to the United Staes of America leaving Liverpool on 6th June 1906 and arriving on 18th June 1906 at Philadelphia.

In the 1911 census Leslie Stray 19 yrs a drapers assistant is living at 20 Peveril Street, Nottingham, he is living with his uncle and aunt, Joseph Henry Carnill 52 yrs a jeweller and Ellen Carnill 49 yrs.

Military history

Corporal Leslie Stray enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 18th Battalion King's Liverpool Regiment, he was killed in action on 23rd April 1917 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the ArrasMemorial.

His next of kin on his pension record card is his married sister Ida Clifford his mother is listed as being care of Mrs Rodgers 186 Queen Street East Toronto, Ontario, Cnada.
