Family history

(Samuel) James Matthews was born in 1875 at Crettingham, Suffolk, he was the son of James a bricklayer and Emma Matthews née Moore and the brother of Thomas, Samuel and Florence Matthews.

His father James was born in 1854 at Winston, Suffolk his mother Emma Moore was born in 1856 at Crettingham, Suffolk, they were married in 1873 at Bosmere, Suffolk, they went on to have 11 children, sadly 4 were to die in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census the family were living at 25 Thorneywood Lane Nottingham, James 57 yrs is a brick;layer, he is living with his wife Emma 56 yrs and their children, James 35 yrs Single and a carter, Thomas 18 yrs single a labourer, Samuel 18 yrs single a printer and Florence 16 yrs a sewing machinist.

Military history

Private James Mathews enlisted an served with the 12th battalion South Staffordshire Regiment, he transferred to (15760) 115th Coy Labour Corps and died on 16th December 1918 at the 34th casualty clearing station, France of delamination of the stomach he is buried at Solesmes British Cemetery
