In 1881 he was a pupil at Hadham Road Non-Conformist Grammar School Bishops Stortford Hertfordshire. By 1891 he was a railway engineer. He was chief engineer to South Indian Railway, and a Major in their Volunteer.

Family history

John Thorpe Lewis was born on 24th Janaury 1868 at Nottingham, he was the son of James Winterbotham Lewis a hosiery manufacturer and Eliza Bertha Lewis née Thorpe and the brother of Edith, James, Stanley, Caroline, Alice and Frederick Lewis.

His father James Winterbotham Lewis was born in 1825 at Tewesbury he died in 1902 at Nottingham, aged 77 yrs, his mother Eliza Bertha Thorpe was born in 1838 at Nottingham she died in 1885 in Rome aged 47 yrs, they were married on 27th May 1858 at St Marys, Nottingham. they went on to have 8 children.

In 1871 they lived at 9 Arboretum Street Nottingham. In 1891 the family lived at 19 Pelham Terrace Standard Hill Nottingham.

Probate LEWIS John Thorpe of Trichinopoly Southern India captain 6th Lincolnshire regiment died 9 August 1915 at the Dardenelles Probate London 27 September to Frederick Wililam Lewis M.R.C.S. Effects £13382 4s. 9d. Former Grant P.R. March 1916.

Military history

He was Chief Engineer to the South Indian Railway and a major in their volunteers he served with the 6th battalion Lincolnshire Regiment, he died on 9th August 1915 at Chocolate Hill Anagarta Bay, Galipolli having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Galipoli.
