Leslie Herbert Johnson was baptised on 2nd June 1895 at Shambrook, Bedford, he was the son of the late George Staples a lace maker and his second wife Laura Johnson (later Styles) née Herbert

His father George Staples Johnson was born in 1858 at Nottingham, he died in 1904 aged 46 yrs, he married his first wife Catherine Archer born 1858 Nottingham she died in 1889 aged 31 yrs they had a daughter Annie born in 1874. George went on to marry Laura Herbert born 1870 at Shambrook, Bedfordshire they were married on 11th June 1889 at Shambrook, Bedford.

In 1901 they lived at 137 Mansfield Road Nottingham. Laura (Styles) later lived at Richmond Street Krugersdrop Transvaal.

At some point Leslie emigated to South Africa where he enlisted into the South African Forces.

Military history

Private Leslie Hebert Johnson enlisted on 5th January 1916 in South Africa, he served with the 2nd Regiment Infantry South African Forces and died in France of influenza on 14th October 1918, he is buried at Ors British Cemetery, France
