Family history

John James Collington was born in 1887 at Beeston, Nottingham, he was the son of John a labourer and Rebecca Collington née Carter of Brook Street, Wymeswold Loughborough. He was the brother of Ernest, Edith, Florence, Frederick, Mary and George Collington.

His father John was born in 1859 at Wymswold, his mother Rebecca Carter was born in 1864 at Kirkby Woodhouse, they were married on 1st August 1886 at St John’s Church, Beeston, they went on to have 8 children.

In the 1911 census his family were living at Brook Street, Wymswold, John 52 yrs is a labourer, he is living with his wife Rebecca 47 yrs and their children, John James 24 yrs a an iron shaper and planer, Ernest 21 yrs a labourer, Edith 14 yrs a scholar, Florence 11 yrs a scholar, May 7 yrs of age and George 5 yrs of age.

John James married Julie Ann Turlington (born 19th December 1888 ) in 1913 their marriage was recorded in the Loughborough registration district, they lived at 40 Mountsorrel Road, Quorn Loughborough. They had a daughter Rebecca Grace born 10th May 1914.

Commencing 16th August 1915 his widow was awarded a pension of 15 shillings a week.

Military history

John James Collington attested on 26 February 1904 at Nottingham and was sent to the depot at Derby. He was 18 years 2 months and stood 5 feet four inches. On 7 July he was posted to the 2nd Battalion Sherwood Foresters. In 1908 he was transferred to the army reserve. He was mobilized at Derby on 5 August 1914 and went to France with 'B' company, 1st Battalion on 4 November 1914. On 26 January 1915 John James was taken to 25th Field Ambulance with a compound fracture of the skull and he died of his wounds on 28th. He was buried in Estaires Communal Cemetery and Extension.
