John Clarke was born in 1877 at Kilkerrin, he married Rose Steel (born 6th July 1897 Derby) in 1910 their marriage was recorded in the Chesterfield registration district, they lived at 13 St Cuthberts Road, Nottingham.
In the 1911 census the family are living at 13 St Cuthberts Road, Nottingham, John Clarke is 33 yrs of age and is a Police Constable, he is living with his wife Rose 31 years, he states they have been married for a year.
Private John Clarke enlisted at Nottingham on 16th April 1915 , he initially served with the service number 5630 in The Connaught Rangers, he died of wounds received in action at the No 36 casualty clearing station in France on 12th September 1916. He is buried in Heilly Station Cemetery, Mericourt-L'Abbe ,Somme, France
