Henry Blanchard was born in 1882 at Nottingham, he was the son of William a house painter and Mary Blanchard née Foxon and the brother of Thomas, Benjamin, Fanny and Arthur Blanchard of 112 St Stephens Road, Nottingham,
His father William was born in 1848 at London, his mother Mary Ann Foxon was born in 1860 at Rufddington, they were married in 1882 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they had 4 children.
In 1901 they lived at 12 Angrave Street Bluebell Hill Road St Ann's Nottingham.
Henry Blanchard later lived at 112 St Stephen's Road Sneinton Nottingham.
In 1911 Henry was boarding at 2 Lockwood Lane, Goldthorpe Bolton upon Dearne near Rotherham 30 yrs a coal miner
Private Henry Blanchard had previously served in the 4th Derbyshire Militia. ('15 years ago' according to his Attestation). He attested in 2/9/14 at Wath on Dearne standing 5'5" tall and weighing 141 lbs. Landing in France he was posted 18/3/1915, was admitted to hospital at Rouen with bronchitis 28/3/1915, returned to his unit in the field 26/4/1915 and went missing 8/5/1915.
He had a poor disciplinary record but his offences were minor and punished with varying terms of CB (Confined to Barracks). For being absent from parade he lost a Lance Corporal stripe awarded 17/9/1914.
He was killed in action on 8th May 1915 having no known grave his names is commemorated on the Ypres Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium.
He was born A/M/J/1881 so may have been 34 when killed. It is possible that although living and working in Nottingham Blanchard returned to South Yorkshire to enlist with friends made during his time working in the Wath area around 1911.
