Ernest Smith was born in 1883 at Nottingham he was married to Elizabeth Ann Corrall (born 26th October 1881 ) they were married in 1907 at Nottingham, she brought a daughter Florence Corral born 1904 to the marriage.
The contact address for his widow was given on the medal roll as Victoria Laundry, 187 Sherwood Street, Nottingham. Elizabeth was his sole legatee; there is no record of any children on the Register of Soldiers' Effects.
He married his wife Elizabeth Ann Corrall on 20th January 1907 at St Albans Church, Sneinton, Nottingham, he gave his age as 23 yrs and occupation as that of a butcher and his address as 23 Keswick Street, Elizabeth gave her age as 25 yrs a laundress and living at 23 Keswick Street.
In the 1911 census the family are living at 1 John Square, Keswick Street, Nottingham, Ernest 28 yrs is a carter he is living with his wife Elizabeth Ann 29 yrs and her daughter Florence Corrall 7 yrs a scholar.
His pension record card shows his wife as Elizabeth Ann (born 26th October 1881) she lived at 187 Sherwood Street, Nottingham.
Commencing 30th June 1919 his widow was awarded a pension of 13 shillings and 9 pemce a week.
Private Ernest Smith enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 11th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He served in France from 25 February 1915. He was reported missing on 22 October 1918 but his relatives did not get confirmation of his death until the following year. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Vis-en-Artois Memorial (Panel Reference:7). He qualified for the 1915 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal.
Nottingham Evening Post notice (abridged), 22 August 1919: ‘Smith. My husband Private Ernest Smith, 11th Sherwood Foresters, late 1/7th Sherwood Foresters, missing October 22nd 1918, now reported killed. Wife. Mother, sister.’
Medal Roll: Regimental Number 2139/265345. annotated (undated): ‘Mrs EE Smith makes application for her late husband’s medals. Address: Victoria Laundry, 187 Sherwood Street, Nottingham.'
