Samuel Smith was born in 1871 at Nottingham, he was the husband of Kate Smith, (born 30th March 1867) they lived at 6, Dean St., Hollow Stone, Nottingham.

He had sisters Annie and Lizzie.

Military history

Private Samuel Smith enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 10th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he was killed in action, 14th February 1916, aged 45, during heavy German shellfire and the explosion of a German mine, prior to the German attack of the front line trenches, near the canal to the south-east of Ypres, Belgium.

He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial.
