Family history

George Jewitt Smith was born in 1890 at Nottingam, he was the son of the late Joseph Charles Smith a joiner and Fanny Maria Smith née Jewitt and the brother of Boulton and Fanny Maria Smith of 7 Sussex Street Middle Marsh Nottingham.

His father Joseph Charles was born in 1849 at Nottingham, he died in 1910 aged 65 yrs, his mother Fanny Maria Jewitt was born in 1853 in Wakefield, they were married on 2nd August 1874 at Christ Church, Kensington, Lancaster, they went on to have 8 children sadly 1 was to die in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census the family are living at 7 Sussex Street, Middle Marsh, Nottingham, Fanny Maria 58 yrs a widow and a grocer she is living with her children, Joseph Charles 28 yrs an iron turner, George 21 yrs an assistant grocer, Boulton 19 yrs an electrical light worker and Fanny Maria 22 yrs a blouse machinist.

Military history

Private George Jewitt Smith enlisted at Nottingham, he initially served with the service number 54659 in the Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment) he later transferred to the 5th battalion King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, he was killed in action on 20th July 1918. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Soissons Memorial
