Family history

James Scothern was born in 1887 at Nottingham, he was the son of the late George a grocers porter and Elizabeth Scothern and the brother of Florence Scothern and William Scothern

William married Elizabeth Wilks (born 15th October 1879) in 1906 at St George Church, Hanover Square, London, they had children, George Percy born 26th March 1907, Violet May born 13th January 1909, Charles Edward born 1st April 1910 and Barbara Jane born 29th July 1913.

In the 1911 census the family lived at 18 Ganville Street, Derby James Scothern 23 yrs is a railway porter, he is living with his wife Elizabeth 31 yrs and their children, George Percy 4 yrs, Violet May 2 yrs and Charles Edward 1 year of age.

James's father pre-deceased him.

Military history

Trooper James Scothern enlisted at Nottingham on 18th November 1911 , he was a cabinet maker, he served with 'B' Sqdn 1st Life Guards, he died of wounds on 9th November 1914, at Australian Voluntary Hospital, Wimereux and is buried at Wimereux Communal Cemetery

Nottingham Evening Post obituary (abridged), 24 November 1914: 'Scothern. On 10th inst, died of wounds at Boulogne, Private James Scothern, 1st Life Guards, only son of Elizabeth and the late George (sic) Scothern, aged 27 years.'
