John Kesteven Potter was born in 1872 at Loughborough, he was the son of the late Thomas Henry Potter a fitter at the Royal Arsenal and Mary Ann Kesteven of Woolwich London.
His father Thomas Henry was born in 1847 at Loughborough, he died in 1883 aged 36 yrs his mother Mary Ann Kesteven was born in 1849 at Manfield, Nottingham, they were married on 25th October 1871 at Loughborough, they had 9 children
John married his first wife Edith Fanny Flaxman born 1875 in Farnham, Buckingham, they were married in 1901 at Woolwich, she died in on 27th January 1909 they had 2 children, Cissie Esther Potter born 1907 and John Edward Potter born 1910.
In 1911 they lived at 2 Rushton's Place Bellar Gate Nottingham.
Folowing the death of his first wife he went on to marry Alice Mary Bilby born 1880 at Eastwood, they were married on 7th August 1915 at Nottingham Registry office they had 2 children Irene Marjories born 26th July 1913 and Hugh Frank born 15th September 1915.
At the time of his death his widow was living at 55 Seymour Street, Carlton Road, Nottingham, she was awarded apension of 22 shillings and 11 pence a week, commencing 12th March 1918.
Sapper John Kesteven Potter enlisted at Nottingham, on 1st June 1915 at Nottingham giving his address as 36 Pipe Street, Nottingham, he was an iron fitter he was 43 yrs and 4 months old he was married his next of kin was his wife Alice. He stated he had 12 yrs previous army service wit the Royal Engineers. he was posted to the 154 field company Royal Engineers, landing in France on 19th February 1916 he was killed in action on 1st July 1916, he is buried at Bienvillers Military Cemetery
