Family history

John Thomas Mason was born in 1887 at Normanton, Derbyshire, he was the son of Frank Mason a former soldier who also served (Sergeant 7371) and later general labourer wooden box maker, and the late Elizabeth Mason née St John of 36 Davidson Street, Colwick Road, Nottingham.

His father Francis Arther Mason was born in 1863 at Nottingham, his mother Elizabeth St John was born in 1850 at Longford, Ireland, she died in 1912 aged 62 yrs they were married in 1884 at Longford, Ireland, they went on to have 10 children, sadly 1 was to die in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census the family are living at 2 South Street, Sneinton, Frank Mason head of the family 46 yrs is a general labourer in a wooden box maker, he is living with his wife Elizabeth 46 yrs and their children, Kate Hannah 21 yrs a card board box maker, James 13 yrs a scholar, Hilda May 10 yrs a scholar, Lillian Florence 8 yrs a scholar, Charles Walter 6 yrs and William Alexander 1 year of age.

In the same 1911 census John is in the army he is serving with the 1st battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he is in barrack in India, he is 25 yrs and is single.

Military history

Private John Mason enlisted on 27th February 1904 at Derby giving his age as 18 yrs and 1 month, he was a labourer. He was posted to the 1st battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he served in India from 1906 until 14th March 1912 when he was returned to England where he served until he was mobilised on 5th August 1914. He died on 25th September 1914 at Plymouth Hospital of tuberculosis of the glands on his next and lungs. He had served for a total of 10 yeards and 211 days he is buried at Plymouth (Efford) Cemetery.
