Bernard Goulding was born William Bernard Goulding in 1898 at Nottingham, he was the son of John William a gas plumber and Margaret Mary Goulding née Sarson of 49 Burton Street Nottingham.

His father John William was born in 1867 at Lincoln, his mother Margaret Mary Sarson was born in 1870 at Newark, they were married on 21st December 1888 at St Paricks Romn Catholice Church, Nottingham, they had 2 further sons Arthur born 1891 Nottingham and Francis born 1895 Nottingham.

In the 1911 census the family are living at 27 Trinity Square, Nottingham, Margaret Goulding wife married is 41 yrs of age she is living with her sons Arthur 20 yrs a plumber, Francis 16 yrs a joiners apprentice and Bernard 12 yrs a scholar. the father John William doe not appears at this address on the night of the census.

Military history

Private Bernard Goulding enlisted at Nottingham, he served wit the 9th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, served with the battalion at Gallipoli aged 17 and in Egypt moving to France with in July 1916. He fought on The Somme in September 1916 and Messines in June 1917. He was killed in action on 4 October 1917 during the Battle of Broodseinde during which the battalion attacked in front of the village of Poelcappelle. The attack was successful and all objectives taken but at a high cost of nearly 300 killed and wounded, having no known grave his name is commemroated ont eh Tyne Cot Memorial.
