William Elsey was born in 1896 at Nottingham, he was the only son of William an engine driver and Maria Elsey née Carroll of 6 East Street, Nottingham.

His father William was born in 1873 at London, his mother Maria Carroll was born in 1872 at Nottingham, they were married in 1895 at Nottingham.

In the 1911 census the family lived at 6 East Street Nottingham, William head of the family is 41 yrs, he is an engine driver, he is living with his wife Maria 39 yrs a box maker, they are living with their son Leoard 14 yrs who is working in the printing trade,

Military history

Private Leonard Elsey enlisted at Doncaster whilst residing at Nottingham, he initially served witht he service number 18348 in the Yorkshire Light Infnatry, he was serving with the 62nd battalion Machine Gun Corps when he was killed in action on 12th September 1918, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Vis-En-Arois Memorial
