Alfred Lister Ellis was born on 12th June 1885 , he was baptised on 15th July 1885 at All Saints Church, Gorton, Lancashire, he was the son of the late James William Ellis a cabinet maker and Annie Ellis née Riley

His father James William Ellis was born in 1859 at Middlesborough, he died in 1911 he was 52 yrs old, his mother Annie Riley was born in 1858 in the Meadwos, Nottingham, they were married in 1881 at Oldham, Lancashire, they had two further Children, William born 1881 and Thomas Richard born 1885 (died 1885)

In the 1911 census, Alfred Lister Ellis 26 yrs married is a boot repairer and clogger, he is living with his widowed mother Annie Ellis 53 yrs.

Alfred Lister was the husband of Ethel Ellis née Atkin (born 26th June 1885) they were married on 6th August 1906 at Christ Church, Radford, Nottingham, they lived at 7 Cross Cut, Derby Street Nottingham they had children, Ada born 9th April 1910 Ervine Herbert born 13th June 1911 and William Alfred born 3rd November 1918.

Commencing 23rd December 1918 his widow was awarded a pension of 29 shillings and 7 pence a week.

Military history

Private Alfred Lister Ellis enlisted at Manchester whilst residing at Ardwick, Lancashire, he served wit the 11th Field Company,Royal Engineers, he died of wounds on 5th June 1918 and is buried at Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Belgium.
