Frederick John Brown was born c1868 at Aldershot, he was the son of the late Arthur John and Jane Brown née Stanhope
His father Arthur Brown was born in 1842 at Sneinton, Nottingham, he died in 1905 at Nottingham aged 63 yrs, his mother Jane Stanhope was born in 1842 at Ab kettlby, Leicstershire, they were married on 29th December 1862 at St Marys, Nottingham, the family was living in Lenton, Christchurch parish, at the time of the 1891 census. Sisters Frances J, Alice, Emily Agnes, Beatrice L, Grace, Edith and Nelly, brothers Albert and Harry (1891 census).
In the 1911 census his widowed mother Jane Brown is 66 yrs she is living at 38 Bovill Street, Radford, she is living withher children, Grace 31 yrs an overlooker, Nellie 25 yrs a pattern girl and her grandaughter Dorothy Brown 8 yrs.
Frederick was the husband of Emma Thompson, whom he married on 19th April 1892 at Lenton Priory Church, Nottingham he was the father of Arthur born in 1902 (1911 Census).
In the 1911 census the family are living at Clarence Street, Council Schools House, Clarendon Street, Frederick John Brown 43 yrs is a school caretaker, he is living with his wife Emma 45 yrs and their son Arthur Richley Brown 9yrs old.
Army service records survive (TNA). Joined Northumberland Fusiliers at Newcastle upon Tyne on 19 October 1887 on his conditional discharge from the Derbyshire Regiment (Militia) on 17 October 1887. Short Service attestation with Northumberland Fusiliers, regimental number 2514. He re enlisted on 27th March 1915 he served with the 6th reserve brigade Royal Field Artillery and was discharged on 17th December 1917 due to sickness. He was awarded a Silver war badge number 286997 He died on 27th May 1919 at Nottingham General Hospital and interred Nottingham General Cemetery (grave ref 03089)
