Family history

Ernest Willoughby was born in 1891 at Lincoln, he was the son of the late John Wilcox Willoughby and Mary Ann Willoughby , Née Esberger of Lincoln.

John Wilcox Willoughby was born in 1867 at Lincoln, he died in 1894 aged 27 yrs his mother Mary Ann Esberger was born in 1863 at Lincoln, they were married on 24th June 1888 at St Swithins Church, Lincoln, they had 2 further children, John Henry born 1888 and Emma Elizabeth born 1892.

Following the death of his father his mother went on to re marry Robert Barnett born 1868 at Uppingham, Rutland, they were married in 1896 at Lincoln.

In the 1911 census the family are living at 98 Salisbury Street, Nottingham, Robert 43 yrs is a sawyer he islivingwith his wife Mary Ann Barnett 42 yrs and their children, Emma Willoughby 18 yrs a blouse maker and Louie Barnett 14 yrs, Robert E Barnett 11 yrs, Herbert Barnett 7 yrs and Gladys Barnett 4 yrs of age.

In the same 1911 census we find that Ernest has left the family home, he is lodging at 2 Colultham Terrce, Lincoln he is single 20 yrs and an iron foundry labourer, he is lodging with Flora Musson 25 yrs and her son Sammie Musson 7 yrs of age.

His mother Mrs. Mary Anm Barnett (Formerly Willoughby), later lived at School Lane, Wollaton, Nottingham.

Military history

Private Ernest Willoughby enlisted at Lincoln whilst residing at Wollaton, on 20th August 1914, he was 23 yrs and 314 days old, he was a foundry labourer, he served with the 1st battalion Lincolnshire Regiment and went to Galipoli with his battalion, he was killed in action on 9th August 1915. having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Helles Memorial.
