Family history

Tom Underdown was born on 30th July 1886 at Membury, Devon he was the son of the late Richard a gardener and his second wife Amelia Underdown née Pinney of Butts Castle, Ilminster, Somerset.

His father was born in 1832 at Stockland, Devon, he died in 1908 at Chard, Somerset he was 76 yrs old, his mother Amelia Pinney was born in 1851 at Winsham, Somerset, they were married in 1879 at Axminster, they went on to have 10 children, sadly 1 was to die in infancy or early childhood.

His fathers first marriage was to Virgina Underdown (his first cousin) born 1835 Northleigh Devon, she died in 1878 at St Thomas Devon, they were married on 6th June 1864 at St Marys Church Chatham, Kent, they had 4 children.

In the 1911 census the family are living at West Street, Ilminster, Somerset, Amelia Underdown 57 yrs is a widow and a laundress she is living with her children, Tom 24 yrs single a threader at bobbin net factory, Eva 22 yrs single a domestic servant, and Sydney 16 yrs a domestic gardener.

Military history

Private Tom Underdown enlisted at Taunton, Devon whilst residing at Beeston, Nottingham, he served wit the 8th battalion Gloucestershire Regiment, he died on 30th November 1918 of 'Grippe' (influenza) in Germany, he is buried Berlin South Western Cemetery, Germany.
