Leonard Frederick Topham was born in 1897 at Radford, he was the son the late Leonard Topham a coal miner and Ellen Elizabeth Topham née Firman and the brother of Annie Maria, Ernest Charles, Ellen Rebecca and Albert Edwin Topham.
His father Leonard was born in 1871 at Derby he died in 1912 he was 41 yrs of age, his mother Ellen Elizabeth Firman was born in born in 1865 at Canning Town, London, they were married on 20th August 1895 at St Augustine Church, New Basford, they went on to have 5 childrem.
In the 1911 census the family were living at 105 Park Street New Lenton Nottingham Ellen Elizabeth 46 yrs a lace clipper and scalloper, she is living with her children, Anna Maria 19 yrs a fine cotton doubler, Leonard Frederick 15 yrs a book binder, Ernest Charles 10 yrs a scholar, Ellen Rebecca 8 yrs and Albert Edwin 2 yrs of age.
Leonard Frederick married Florence Martin born 13th February 1896, they were married on 1st November 1913 at the Nottingham register office, they had children, Leonard James born 28th February 1914 and Ernest Frederick born 30th June 1915. they lived at 5 Annarth Terrace, Kirklake Street, Notingham.
Commencing 21st January 1918 his widow was awarded a pension of 22 shillings and 11 pence a week.
Private Leonard Frederick Topham was called up for service on on 7th September 1916 he was 23 yrs and 61 days, his address was 5 Annarth Terrace, Kinglake Street, Nottingham he was a bookbinder, he reported to the depot at Derby on 11th September 1916, he was posted to the Sherwood Foresters Regiment with service number 60259. on 14th September 1916. He embarked fron Folkston eon 2nd March 1917 arriving at Bolougne the same day. he was posted on 12th March 1917 to the 15th Company machine guns corps.
He was killed in action on 29th June 1917 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial.
