George Henry Thurlby was born in 1880 at Helpringham, near Sleaford, he was the son of Alfred a general labourer and Sarah Jane Thurlby née Dodds of Sleaford.
His father Alfred was born in 1859 at Helpringham, his mother Sarah Jane Dodds was born in 1863 at Blankney Heath, Lincolnshire, they were married in 1878 at Sleaford.
George Henry married Elizabeth Elson (born 6th April 1879) they were married on 28th August 1902 at Grantham, they lived at 5 Commercial Street, Lenton, they had the following children, Georege Robert born 12th June 1901, Elsie Beatrice Alexandria born 29th August 1902, Violet born 1st November 1904, Gertrude born 1st April 1904, and Frederick Harold born 17th May 1911.
In the 1911 census the family were lvivng at 13 Greenwoods Row, Welby Street, Grantham, George Henry 31 yrs of age is a leather dresser in skin works, he is living with his wife Elizabeth 31 yrs and their children, Doris May 13 yrs George Robert 9 yrs, Beatrice 8 yrs, Violet 6 yrs and Gertrude 3 yrs of age.
Commencing 15th November 1915 his children were awarded a pension of 14 shillings and 6 pence a week, his widow was not entitled to a pension at this time owing to her unworthy conduct, however this was reviewd and she was awarded a pension of 12 shillings and 6 pence a week commencing 1st March 1917.
Private George Henry Thurlby enlisted at Grantham whilst residing at Lenton, Nottingham, he served with the 1st batalion Lincolnshire Regiment, he landed in France on 26th October 1914, he was killed in action on 1tth November 1914, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Ypres Menin Gate Memorial, Belgium
