Family history

Samuel Harvey Powell was born on 1st June 1898 at Lichfield, he was the only son of the late Samuel James Powell a butcher and Ann Catharine Conway (Formerly Powell) née Harvey , of 2, Blind Lane, Wirksworth, Derbyshire.

His father Samuel James Powell was born in 1864 at Newent, Gloucestershire he died in in 1900 at Belper he was 45 yrs of age, his mother Ann Catherine Harvey was born in 1863 at Lichfiled, they were married on 25th December 1896 at Lichfield, following the death of his father his mother went on to marry Joseph Conway born 1881 at Middleton by Wirksworth, they were married in 1910 the marriage was recorded in the Belper Registration district, he was a miller and carter.

In the 1911 census the family are living at 2 Blind Lane, Wirksworth, Joseph Conway 30 yrs a miller and carter is living with his wife Ann Catherine Conway 44 yrs and her son Samuel Harvey Powell 12 yrs a scholar.

Military history

Corporal Samuel Harvey Powell enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 11th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he died on 28th October 1918 aged 20 yrs, he is buried at St. Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen, France. S. 2. T. 1.
