Family history

James Bertie Barnes was born in 1894, he was the son of Jonathan Bames a coal miner and Sarah Barnes née Smith and the brother of Bertie Edwin, Eliza Ann, William, Mary Ann, May, Edwin Percy and Mabel Constance Barnes.

His father Johnthan was born in 1853 at Milleham, Norfolk, his mother Sarah Smith was born in 1860 at Bodington, Northampton, she died in 1913 at Nottingham aged 53 yrs, they were married in 1879 their marriage was recorded in the Belper registration district, they had 8 children, sadly 2 were to die in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census the family are living at they lived at 59 Claude Street Old Lenton Nottingham, his mother Sarah Barnes 50 yrs is marrried she is a house keeper for the head of household, James Brown 50 yrs a widow, a coal miner , also living with her are her children, James Bertie 16 yrs a coal miner Edwin Percy 15 yrs a mill hand and Mabel 12 yrs a scholar.

in he same 1911 census we find his father living at Mileham, Swaffham, Norfolk he is 57 yrs of age a farm labourer, he is boarding with Henry Barnes 46 yrs a farm labourer and his family.

James Berite was the husband of Emily Florence Maud Toms born 16th August 1887) ) they were married in 1916 at King's Lynn, Norfolk, they lived at 1 Priory Place Gregory Street Old Lenton, Nottingham,

Commencing 10th June 1918 his widow was awarded a pension of 15 shillings a week.

On 25th January 1919 his widow married his brother Edward Percy Barnes at Lenton Priory Church, Nottingham.

Military history

Lance Sergeant James Bertie Barnes enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 4th battalion Grenadier Guards, he landed in France on 3rd July 1915, he died of wounds on 28th November 1917, he is buried at Achiet-Le-Grand Communal Cemetery Extension, France.
