Family history

Arthur Atherton was born on 3rd March 1880 at Nottingham, he was the son of Robert Olaf Atherton a retired bricklayer and Jane Atherton née Green.

His father Robert Olaf was born in 1835 at Ramsey, Huntingdon, his mother Jane Green was born in 1840 at Faringdon, Berkshire she died in 1904 aged 64 yrs, they were married on 23rd October 1859 at St Marys Church, Nottingha. they had 13 children sadly two were to die in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census the family are living at 2 Longden Street, Nottingham, Robert 75 year old, he was a widow and retired bricklayer he is living with his children, Walter Leemig 40 yrs a carter for the railway company, (son in law) Lucy Leeming 37 yrs a house keeper (married daughter) and grandchildren, Frank Leeming 4 yrs of age, Florence Smith 31 yrs a drapers assistant,

Arthur was the husband of Florrie Heard whom he married on 8th October 1904 at the Nottingham registry office, they had 2 children Gladys and Mabel Atherton.

In the 1911 cnesus the family lived at 6 Churchill Street Gregory Street Nottingham, Arthur 31 yrs is a brick layer, he is living with his wife Florrie 28 yrs and their daughters Gladys 3 yrs of age, and mabel 4 yrs of age.

His pension record card show his wife Florrie lived at 6 Henry Street, Palin Street, Nottingham,

Military history

Private Arthur Atherton enlisted at Nottingham, he initially served with the service number 180759 in the Royal Engineers, he was serving with the 23rd battalion Northumberland Fusiliers, he died on 21st October 1918, he is buried at Tournai Communal Cemetery Allied Extension
