Family history

Walter Smith was born in 1883 at Hyson Green, Nottingham.

He was the husband of Sarah Ellen Smith (née Morgan), (born 9th March 1886 Plumtree) whom he had married on 23rd December 1905 at St John's church Bulwell, and the father of Mary Lily born 3rd May 1906 Ada May born 10th May 1908 and Nellie born 13th December 1910 and Walter Smith.

In 1911 Walter 27 yrs a leather dresser and Sarah 25 yrs and their three daughters, Mary Lily (5), Ada May (3) and Nelly (4 months) lived at 14 Bell Street, Carlton, Nottingham. They also had a lodger, Florence Ann Racliffe (26). Their son, Walter, was born the following year (birth registered Apr/May/Jun 1912).

Commencing 22nd January 1917 his widow was awarded a pension of 21 shillings

Military history

Corporal Walter Smith enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 1st battalion South Staffordshire Regiment, he died on the first day of the Battle of the Somme and has no known grave but is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial (Pier and face 7B). He qualified for the British War Medal and Victory Medal.

Nottingham Evening Post notice (abridged), 24 July 1916: ‘Smith. Killed in action July 1st, Corporal Walter Smith, South Staffordshire, aged 33. Wife and children.’

Soldiers' Effects: his widow, Sarah, was his sole legatee and she received payments for herself and their children.
