Family history

William Ewart Matthews was born in 1897 at Lenton, he was the son of William a manufacturer chemist assistant and his first wife the late Sarah Anne Matthews née Pitman and the brother of Arnold Ernest Matthews b1886 and Mabel b1888.

His father was born in 1850 at Cammeringham, Lincolnshire, his mother Sarah Anne Pitman was born in 1859 .at Duffield, Derbyshire, she died in 1907 aged 47 yrs, they were married in 1884 at Nottingham, they had 2 other children, Arnold Ernest b1886 and Mabel born 1888 .

His father remaried in 1910 at Nottingham to Mary Elizabeth James.

In the 1911 census the family lived at Hill View Road Porhester, Thorneywood, Carlton Nottingham.William 61 yrs is a manufacturing chemist assistant, he is living with his second wife Mary 52 yrs and his children Arnold Ernest 25 yrs a clerk and William Ewart 14 yrs a grocers assistant.

Military history

Private William Ewart Matthews enlisted at Nottingham whilst reiding at Thorneywood, he served wit the 2/5th battalion Sherwood Foresters Rgiment. He was killed in action, 21st March 1918, whilst holding the line near Noreuil, France on the opening day of the German Spring Offensive or (Kaiserschlact) Having no know grave his name is commemorated: Arras Memorial, France. Bay 7.
