Edgar Thorpe was born in 1899 at Nottingham, he was the son of Walter Charles a engineers manager and Ellen Thorpe née Baxter of 45 Crompton Road, Sherwood, Nottingham.
His father Walter Charles was born in 1861 at Sheffield, his mother Ellen Baxter was born in 1863 at Manchester they were married on 25th April 1886 at Holy Trinity church, Hulme, Lancaster, they went on to have 8 children, sadly 1 died in infancy or early childhood.
In the 1911 census the family are living at 45 Crompton Road, Sherwood, Nottingham, Walter Charles 50 yrs is an engineers manager, he is living with his wife Ellen 48 yrs and their children, Ethel 21 yrs no occupation listed, Alice 20 yrs a dressmaker, Fred 14 yrs an office boy, Edgar 12 years a scholar, Arthur 10 yrs and Jack Baxter 7 years of age.
Corporal Edgar Thorpe enlisted on 28th September 1914, giving a false age of 19 years and 9 months, (he was born in 1899 so was 15 yrs old.) he was a warehouseman living at 45 Crompton Road, Sherwood he was posted to the Sherwood Foresters Regiment, landing in France 28th June 1915, he served in France until 6th December 1915 when he was returned to Englad, where he served until 25th January 1916 he was discharged from the Army 28th January 1916 having made a mis statement as to his age on his enlistment.
He rejoined the Army when he was old enough and posted to the 1/4th Leicestershire Regiment, he served with his regiment and was killed in action on 29th September 1918, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Vis-En-Artois Memorial.
