Hubert Oswald Severn was born in 1891 at Nottingham he was the son of Thomas Severn a coal miner and Ruth Severn née Gamble of 3 Osborne Street Sherwood Nottingham.

His father Thomas was born in 1845 at Shipley, Derbyshire, his mother Ruth Gamble was born in 1849 also at Shipley, they were married on 16th May 1864 at Cotmanhay, they went on to have 11 children, sadly 1 was to die in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census his parents are living at 5 Chandos Street, Nottingham, Thomas 66 years is a n invalid retired coal miner, he is living with his wife Ruth 62 years of age.

Military history

Private Hubert Oswald, Severn enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 1/4th battalion Seaforth Highlanders, he died of wounds on 9th July 1917 and is buried at Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery
