Archie Walter Gill was born in 1900 at Basford, he was the son of Samuel Gill a frame work knitter and Harriett Gill née Langford of 16 Haddon Street, Sherwood.

His father Samuel was born in 1861 at Belper, his mother Harriett Langford was born in 1871 at Leverinton, Cambridgeshire, they were married on 8th January 1898 at St Augustine Church, New Basford, they went on to have 3 children, sadly 1 died in infancy or early childhood, their other surviving child was Harry born 1906 at Basford.

In the 1911 census the family are living at 51 Suez Street, New Basford, Nottingham Samuel 50 yrs is a frame work knitter, he is living with his wife Harriett 40 yrs and their children, Archie 11 yrs and Harry 5 yrs of age.

Military history

Private Archie Walter Gill enlisted at Nottingham, he initially served with the service number 21600 in the Leicestershire Regiment, he was killed in action on 28th May 1918, having no known grave his name is on the Soissons Memorial, France.
