Family history

John William Bates was born in 1897 at Eastville, Lincolnshire he was the son of William Bates a seedman on a farm and his first wife the late Emma Ann Chapman of West Fen, New, Bolingbroke,Boston.

His father William was born in 1875 at Boston, Linolnshire, his mother Emma Ann Chapman was born in 1877 at Spilsby, Lincolnshire, she died in 1898 aged 21 yrs, they had a further child, George born 1898.

His father re married Thirza Chapman born 1875 at Thorpe Fen, Lincolnshire, in 1899 at Spilsby.

In the 1911 census the family are living at Carrington, New Bolingbroke, Boston, William 36 yrs a seedman on a farm is living with his second wife Thirza 36 yrs and their chidren John William 14 yrs a day boy on a farm and George 12 yrs of age.

Military history

Private John William Bates enlisted at Boston whilst residing at Carrington New Bolingbroke, Boston he served with the 2nd battalion Lincolnshire Regiment, he landed in France on 25th May 1915. He was killed in action on 25th September 1915 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Belgium
