William Henry Barker was born in 1856 at Darlington, the son of John and Harriet Barker (née Gould))
His father John Barker was born in 1811 at Aldbrough. His mother Harriett was born in 1825 at Thorpe, Suffolk. They were married on 14 May 1854 at St Marylebone, Westminster, and had five children two of whom died in infancy or early childhood. William Henry was baptised on 29 September 1856 at Darlington St Cuthbert.
John Barker served in the 11th Hussars attaining the rank of sergeant. He died in 1889 aged 78.
By 1911 William Henry (54), a former policeman, was living at 16 Oak Street, Carrington, Nottingham, with his widowed mother Harriett (87) and his sister Mary Bell (50) whose occupation was given as housekeeper.
Private William Henry Barker served with the 18th Provisional Company, Royal Defence Corps.
He died in Nottingham General Hospital on 17 November 1916 and was buried in Carrington (St John) Churchyard (Special side 23.5).
