Frederick Mahan was born in 1890 at Doncaster, he was the son of Thomas a railway engine driver and Elizabeth Mahan née Oldfield and the brother of Agnes, May, Edward and Albert Mahan.
His father Thomas was born in 1861 in the United Staes of America, his mother Elizabeth Oldfield was born in 1861 at Everton, Nottinghamshire, they were married on 31st January 1889 at Holy Trinity Church, Everton, they went on to have 5 children, the family moved to the Netherfield area of Nottingham prior to 1899.
In the 1911 census the family lived at 1 London and North Western Terrace Netherfield Nottingham, his father Thomas 50 yrs is a railway engine driver he is living with his wife Elizabeth 50 yrs and their children, Frederick 21 yrs a railway engine cleanr, Agnes 19 yrs a lace finisher, May 17 yrs a lace finisher, Edward 14 yrs a hairdressers apprentice and Albert 12 yrs of age.
Sergeant Frederick Mahan enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Netherfield, he served with the 1/7th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, landing in France on 25th February 1915. Awarded the Military Medal London Gazette 3rd June 1916. Killed in action, 1st July 1916, aged 26, during the attack on the German positions at Gommecourt, France, on the first day of the Battle of the Somme. Commemorated: Thiepval Memorial, France. Pier and Face 10 C 10 D and 11 A.
