Family history

John Josiah Start was born on 12th September 1892 at Nottingham, he was baptised on 9th October 1892 at St Ann's he was the son of John a lace mechanic fitter and Jemima Start née Raynor of 25 Morley Road, Porchester Nottingham.

His father John was born in 1858 at Nottingham, his mother Jemima Raynor was born in 1861 at Carrington, they were married on 2nd October 1881 at St Ann's, Nottingham, they went on to have 4 further children, William born 1882, Elizabeth born 1885, Faith born 1888 and Grace born 1894.

In 1911 they lived at 25 Morley Road Porchester Nottingham.

Military history

Private John Josiah Start was called up and enlisted at Derby on 8th March 1917 whilst residing at Nottingham, giving his address as 25 Morley Road, Thorneywood, Nottingham, his age as 24 yrs and 7 months and his occuaption as that of a joiner, he initially served with the Royal Engineers,he transferred to the 2/5th battalion Leicestershire Regimenton 15th August 1917. He landed in France on 26th July 1917 and was killed in action on 9th December 1917 and is buried at Ribecourt Road, Cemetery

His brother Private William Start served with the 8th battalion Lincolnshire Regiment, he was killed in action 30th September 1917 he is buried at Hooge Crater Cemetery.
