William Stanley was born in 1896 at Gunthorpe, Nottinghamshire, he was the son of John a general labourer and Emily of Fairfield Lane, Carlton, Nottingham.

His father John was born in 1866 at West Bridgford, his mother Emily/Emma was born in 1875 at Bleasby, they were married C1898 and had 7 children, sadly 3 were to die in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census the family were living at Rose Lane, Lambley John 45 yrs is a general labourer he is living with his wife Emily 36 yrs and their children William 14 yrs a scholar, Herbert 9 yrs, Harry 7 yrs and Josiah 4 yrs.

Military history

Private William Stanley enlisted on 6th August 1914 at Nottingham, he was 18 yrs and 285 days old, he was a farm hand, he served with the 2nd battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment he was attached to the Machine Gun Corps.

He landed in France on 27th December 1914, he was wounded in action on 7th June 1915, (a gun shot wound) admitted to Hospital at Rouen he was returned to England on 14th June 1915. Following treatment and recovery he returned to France on 7th December 1915. He was killed in action on 15th October 1916 and is buried at Bancourt British Cemetery, France
