CWGC and UK Soldiers Died in the Great War records give only the initial 'W' while the Medal Roll gives his first name as 'Wilfred'. The notice of his death in the local paper gives his first name as 'William'.
Wilfred Pape was born in 1895 at Nottingham, he was the son of Alfred a hosiery factory manager and his first wife Emily Hannah of 17 Bunbury Street, Nottingham.
His father Alfred was born in 1859 at Loughborough, his mother Emily Hannah Whittaker was born in 1860 at Nottingham she died in 1896 aged 41 yrs, they were married in 1878 at Nottingham, they had 7 children.
His father went on to remarry Fanny Atkinson (born 1865 at Nottingham) they were married in 1897 at Nottingham.
In the 1911 census his father Alfred 52 yrs a hosiery factory manager and his second wife Fanny 46 yrs are living at Shearing Hill, Gedling.
Private Wilfred Pape enlisted at Nottingh whilst residing at Gedling, he served with the 17th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, killed in action, 3rd September 1916, during the attack near Beaumont Hamel, France during the Battle of the Somme.he is buried in Knightsbridge Cemetery, Mesnil-Martinsart (grave ref. F.9).
He qualified for the British War Medal and Victory Medal
Nottingham Post notice (abridged) 13 October 1916: 'Pape. Killed in action September 3rd, Private William Pape, Sherwood Foresters, age 21. Sister Cis, brothers.'
