Walter George Newman was born on 1st August 1879, he was baptised on 31st December 1882 at St James Church, Colchester, he was the son of the late Alfred a millers shopman and Elizabeth Newman née Kingsbury of 7 East Street Colchester.
His father Alfred was born in 1849 at Colchester he died in 1903 aged 54 yrs, his mother Elizabeth Kingsbury was born in 1852 at Bures, Suffolk, they were married on 6th April 1871 at Borley Essex, they had 10 children, sadly two were to die in infancy or early childhood.
In the 1911 census his widowed mother Elizabeth 62 yrs is living at 7 East Street, Colchester with her son Frederick 22 yrs a mill hand.
Walter Newman married Hilda Annie Gough (born 13th December 1885 at Shepshed) in 1910 (Leicester registration district); they lived at 250 Sparrow Hill, Shepshed, Loughborough, Leicestershire. Their son Everard Walter was born 17 December 1911.
In the 1911 census Walter 28 yrs an insurance agent and his wife Hilda Annie 25 yrs are living at 12 Kedleston Road, Leicester.
The later CWGC record gives his widow's address as 250 Sparrow Hill, Shepshed, Loughborough, Leicestershire.
Walter Newman enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 2/7th Battalion Sherwood Foresters Notts & Derby Regiment.
He was killed on 26 September 1917.  He has no known grave and is commemorated on the
Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium (Panel 99 to 102 and 162 to 162A).

His widow Hilda was awarded a pension of 19 shillings and 9 pence a week, with effect from 22 April 1918.
