Family history

Leonard Langford was born in 1891 at Blomfield, Shropshire, he was the son of the late Thomas a farm labourer and Elizabeth Langford née Hodnet of Newport, Shropshire.

His father Thomas was born in 1857 at Ightfield, Shropshire he died in 1915 aged 58 yrs, his mother Elizabeth Hodnett was born in 1860 at Ellesmere, Shropshire, they were married in 1881 at Whitchurch, they went on to have 14 children sadly two were to die in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census the family lived at 4 Castle Cottages, Lee Comery Road,Wellington, Shropshire , Thomas 56 yrs is an agricultural labourer, he is living with his wife Elizabeth 51 yrs and their children, Leonard 20 yrs a wagnor on a farm, Maggie 13 yrs a scholar, Ernest 12 yrs a scholar, Albert 10 yrs a scholar and Douglas 9 yrs a scholar

Leonard married Dorothy Ward (born 11th September 1890) on 5t April 1914 at Mapperley Wesleyan Church, they lived at 5 Wycliffe Grove, Mapperley they had a son William Thomas born 14th November 1915.

Commencing 25th February 1918 his widow was awarded a pension of 15 shillings and 9 pence a week.

His widow went to to remarry on 4th November 1918 Thomas Lewis Duckmanton, they lived at Halfway Lake, Alberta, Canada.

Military history

Private Leonard Langford initially enlisted on 7th September 1914 at Shrewsbury, giving his age as 24 yrs and 330 days, he was an agricultural labourer, he was discharged on 21st November 1914 as not beiing likely to become a soldier. He would later re enlisted and serve with the service number 53983 in the Sherwood Foresters and with service number 32057 in The Lincolnshire Regiment. He was killed in action on 1st August 1917 whilst serving with the 2nd battalion Wiltshire Regiment, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Ypres Menin Gate Memorial, Belgium

His brother Private 154464 George Henry Langford of the 6th battalion Machine Gun Crops, was killed in action on 4th November 1918 he is buried in Ors Military Cemetery, (having no Nottingham connection he is not recorded on the this website. )
